Taking care of an old building is easier than you think.  Historic Macon Foundation can help answer your preservation questions.  Here are some common resources that can help answer your questions.

Macon boasts over 5,500 historic buildings in 12 historic districts.  Many buildings that are 50 years old or older are eligible for listing on the National Register.

The National Park Service recently posted this printable illustrated guide to help historic buidling owners understand federal incentives to encourage historic preservation.  The State of Georgia also offers tax incentives at the state level that can be used in conjunction with federal programs.

The Scretary of the Interior has established the standards which guide historic preservation in America.  You may read the list of standards or browse the Secretary's handy illustrated guide.  These guidelines help property owners and the government care for historic properties.

The National Park Service provides specialized technical expertise on a variety of preservation issues.  Check out these guides to learn more about topics like conserving energy, using aluminum and vinyl siding and reparing wood windows.

The National Register of Historic Places is the most important recognition for America's historic and cultural resources.  The Register includes listings for buildings, sites, objects, districts including Macon's 11 historic districts and over 5,000 historic buildings.

In Georgia, the Historic Preservation Division receives all applications for the National Register and reviews all applications for preservation incentives.

Historic Macon Foundation is a Local Partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  The Trust provides training, technical assistance, research and publications to assist preservationists in "helping people to protect, enhance and enjoy the places that matter to them."
