Historic Macon Foundation became the regional leader in historic
preservation on July 31, 2003, with the merger of the Middle Georgia
Historical Society and the Macon Heritage Foundation. The goal
of the merger is to create a stronger, more efficient and effective
voice for historic preservation in Middle Georgia. The mission
of Historic Macon Foundation includes: educating the greater Macon,
Georgia community about its history and historic preservation;
preserving and restoring historic buildings, sites and neighborhoods;
and maintaining and promoting the Sidney Lanier Cottage House Museum,
built in 1840 and birthplace of the noted poet, musician, and soldier
Sidney Lanier (1842-1881). In addition, the Foundation may undertake
and carry on such other businesses, enterprises and pursuits consistent
with its purposes as herein expressed as may from time to time
seem desirable to its Board of Trustees and/or its members.

The
good life in 21st century Macon, as expressed in 25 examples
of domestic architecture and style, has been beautifully
captured in James Barfield and Walter Elliott's book, Living
Macon Style. Please click here to purchase

The bricks
and mortar activities of the Macon Heritage Foundation will be
pursued through continued efforts in neighborhood and downtown
revitalization. The educational mission of the two founding organizations
will merge and promote programs such as the Oral History Project,
Backroads Rambles, Lectures, and Trips. The Sidney Lanier Cottage,
located at 935 High Street and open for public visitation Monday-Saturday
from 10 am – 4 pm, is a featured stop on the Intown Historic
Tour through the Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Cottage
is also the perfect setting for “Sidney’s Salons,”
poetry readings, and other educational programs. During your visit,
be sure to visit the backyard garden and “Side Porch” museum
shop as well!
