The Historic Macon saving places Index (SPI) will identify and highlight priority places for preservation, conservation and recreation in Macon-Bibb County.

Historic Macon is looking further into places that matter to our community and wants to know:

Is there an outdoor area important to you?

What places are part of your cultural identity that we need to protect?

What are the historic buildings and neighborhood spaces that surround these places?

SPI allows Historic Macon to think beyond preserving buildings, but reach into the neighborhoods and natural spaces that contribute to our community identity.

This project is made possible with support from The 1772 Foundation. The Trust for Public Land, Hanbury Preservation Consulting and Jessica Lanier Walden are providing their expertise and guidance to develop this project.

so, what exactly will this project do?

The Saving Places Index will:

  • Identify and prioritize historic preservation, land conservation and natural resource opportunities based on community input and technical analysis.

  • Engage members of the public to articulate their values and vision of protecting Macon’s significant places.

  • Identify high priority projects that reflect community-identified values across the natural and built environment.

  • Raise community awareness and support around the value of the natural and built environment.

  • Create a mapping tool to help local stakeholders identify opportunities based on their own priorities.

how can you help?

With your help, you will assist Historic Macon to identify significant places unrecognized, forgotten, or neglected in our community.
