We are delving deeper into the history of Wesleyan College for Women's History Month.
In 2020, Wesleyan College was granted a "Reframing the Institutional Saga" grant from the Network of Vocational Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) through the Council of Independent Colleges. This project explores the racial history of Wesleyan College, connects the past and the present, and explores all of the ways Wesleyan College has evolved over time. It builds upon an earlier publication by Dr. Samuel Akers, "The First 100 Years," and brings in a rich tapestry of student experience and involvement.
Wesleyan’s Special Collections & Archives Department, along with the Lane Center for Social and Racial Equity, will share some of their findings with the community at our next Sidney’s Salon on March 16, 2023. Our Salon will be held at the Confucius Institute, located on the first floor of the Lucy Lester Willet Memorial Library. We'll start with light refreshments at 5:30, and the presentation will begin at 6.
This exhibit includes historical materials that may be offensive or harmful, which will be discussed during a talk delivered by Dr. Brandi Simpson-Miller. These archival records are evidence of the time in which they were created and often contain language and images that are racist, or otherwise derogatory and insensitive. This content does not reflect the values of Wesleyan College, Historic Macon, or the contributors to this project.
