BACKGROUND

Jean League Newton, AIA, was an accomplished architect and quiet community force in Macon.  She trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in the 1940s and brought elements of the Bauhaus style to her early residential work in central Georgia. In the 1970s, Jean was a founding member and early president of the Historic Preservation Board of the Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission. Her work in this role, and in collaboration with her colleagues, was instrumental in saving much of what is now beloved in the historic neighborhoods of downtown Macon. This Historic Macon Foundation internship in her name is designed to inspire students to continue the mission of protecting enduring architectural elements in our community. The work is made possible through the generosity of her daughters, who remember her best for her strong sense of design, her love of both the traditional and the innovative, and the kind and genteel manner in which she interacted with others.

Historic Macon Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is one of the nation’s largest, most productive and most innovative local historic preservation organizations with more than 700 members and over 6,000 listed historic buildings in our stewardship. Since our founding in 1964, Historic Macon Foundation has served as the regional historical society and preservation organization of note. Our mission is to revitalize communities by preserving architecture and sharing history. Our vision is to be the premier preservation organization in the nation.

Historic Macon saves Macon’s architectural treasures by purchasing, rehabilitating and selling structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, Historic Macon educates the public about the importance of Macon’s history and architecture and runs events to help celebrate Macon’s unique assets. Our programs in economic development and neighborhood revitalization are award winners on a national scale and serve as a model for other preservation and revitalization organizations.

The organization has eight full-time employees and two part-time staffers, all of whom are vibrant, dedicated, fun and hardworking. The office atmosphere is fast-paced, multitasking and highly collaborative. In 2020, the organization adopted a new strategic plan that prioritizes education programming and sharing stories from underrepresented communities and places. The organization’s lofty 10-year goal is “every building has a use and every person has a story.” In 2021, the organization drafted a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility road map to prioritize DEIA in the organization’s work.  Employees are treated as professionals in their expertise. Each staff person has the opportunity to lead and teach other team members and hundreds of volunteers who are interested in our mission. Staff members manage their own time and tasks, and a flexible work schedule is a benefit.

In 2018, thanks to the generous support of The 1772 Foundation and in collaboration with the Trust for Public Land, Hanbury Preservation Consulting and Jessica Lanier Walden, HMF undertook an exciting project called the Saving Places Index. The SPI project used community input to identify and highlight priority places for historic preservation, natural conservation and recreational opportunities into a combined format that could be used to raise community awareness and support for the value of Macon’s built and natural environments. A GIS mapping tool was created as part of the project to create a database of the properties submitted by the public and to provide technical analysis capabilities. HMF is now looking to expand on the use and content of this mapping tool and to integrate it into our daily operations.
